Who are we and why do we do what we do?
About
Haygood Learning was created as a repository of support for gifted learners. It’s the culmination of years of research and resource creation. It’s the wisdom that countless teachers and leaders in gifted education have shared with me. It’s the care and kindness that was shown to me and my family when we needed guidance, reflected and structured in order to pay it forward to the next family in need.
Goal
A primary goal of this website is to reframe “gifted” in a way that:
- Is closer to the research,
- Focuses on common symptoms of giftedness, especially asynchrony, emotional depth and sensitivity, and the ability to synthesize knowledge and experiences in novel and creative ways,
- Highlights the unequivocal fact that giftedness is not elitist and exists proportionally in every demographic, and
- Debunks common myths and misconceptions, especially the idea that all gifted learners will be fine without modifications and interventions.
Asynchrony
“Asynchrony” or “Asynchronous Development” describes a gap between a student’s cognitive ability, social-emotional ability, and/or physical ability.
